Work to start on two new West Oxfordshire housing sites

Work is set to begin to redevelop two outdated housing schemes in West Oxfordshire into modern affordable homes for social rent.

The schemes in Chipping Norton and Woodstock will be demolished and re-built to provide additional housing comprising of 49 new one, two and three-bed homes. This includes 12 at Hailey Avenue, Chipping Norton and 37 at Ryegrass, Woodstock.

Originally built in the 1950s-60s, we decided to completely redevelop these schemes following appraisals which found this was the best possible option for both. They received planning permission in early 2024 and demolition work is due to start at the site on Hailey Road in April and at Ryegrass in June.

Colin Bloodworth, our Director of Development and Partnerships, said: “We are committed to providing homes to a decent, high standard and we are looking forward to work starting at both of these locations.

“We will be regenerating these outdated buildings into new, modern homes with eco-friendly features, including solar panels, air-source heating and electrical vehicle charging points.

“We’re grateful to Homes England for supporting this work with a grant of nearly £5.4m and we’re proud that all of the homes will be available for social rent, helping to meet local demand in two areas where rental prices are high.”

All previous customers were relocated to more suitable, improved accommodation in preparation for the work to take place and we consulted with local communities and stakeholders about the redevelopment.

E G Carter & Co Ltd have been appointed to carry out work on our behalf at the Chipping Norton site. Mathew Vye, Associate Director, said: “E G Carter & Co Ltd are committed to providing high quality homes and are pleased to be working with Cottsway on this latest development. We hope to have completed the demolition onsite by June 2024 and construction of the 12 new homes – a mix of flats, maisonettes and houses - by Summer 2025.”

Feltham Construction Ltd are redeveloping the Woodstock site and Simon Lampard, Construction Director, said: “Feltham are delighted to be redeveloping the former housing scheme at Ryegrass to provide 37 high-quality affordable 1 and 2-bed apartments in the town. We hope to be on site in June and to have completed the build by the end of next year.”

Both developers have partnered with us recently, working on regenerating our former housing schemes at Blenheim Court, Carterton (Feltham Construction) and Lavender Place, Bampton (E G Carter & Co Ltd). Both schemes were successfully completed in 2022.
