If we need to move you (decants)
While it is rare, there may become a need to move you to alternative accommodation, either temporarily or permanently. This is known as a decant.
Deciding to move someone out of their home is not taken lightly and can depend on different circumstances. Generally, these fall into three categories:
- Emergency decants
This happens when there has been an unexpected event, such as a fire or flood, that makes a home unsafe to live in. - Temporary decants
These are required when we need to carry out planned major repairs or upgrades to a home, and the work would be too disruptive for you to remain there during the process. - Permanent decants
In some cases, after thorough consideration, we may take the decision to move you to a more suitable, better-quality property. This may apply if your current home is outdated, no longer meets modern standards, or is in an area we are planning to redevelop. Where this happens, we inform customers well in advance of any planned improvement or redevelopment works and keep them updated throughout the process.
We will assess each situation on a case-by-case basis to determine whether a move is necessary and, if so, try to find the most suitable alternative accommodation for you. Every move will be managed individually, taking into account:
- The reason for the move
- The type of work needed at your home (if applicable), including how long it will take and how disruptive it might be
- The number of people in your household and their specific needs
- How your local council handles emergency housing (where applicable)
- The local facilities you may need and what is available in the proposed area
We understand that moving home can bring up a range of emotions and can be stressful, even if only moving for a short time. If you’re required to move, for any reason, we will support you every step of the way.
In some cases, you may need to move into temporary accommodation. This could include a bed and breakfast or hotel, staying with friends or family, emergency housing arranged by your local council, a private rental, or another Cottsway property.
If the work required at your home is extensive and would cause long-term disruption, we may offer you a permanent move to another property.
Every situation is different, and it is important that respond to situations on a case-by case basis. We would guide you through the process and keep you informed throughout. If the move is to allow work to be carried out at your home, we will, of course, keep you updated on our progress along the way.

We check your home every 5 years to see what condition it’s in and this helps us to plan for ongoing maintenance, as our goal is to ensure your home is safe and secure, and to a decent standard. This is known as a stock condition survey.
We inherited many of our homes from councils and other housing groups and they are not all alike. If a home is small and outdated or too expensive to fix, we might decide to refurbish the old building, or demolish and redevelop the site, or sell the home instead.
Situations like this are rare and each case is different, so we always take into consideration every option available before making a decision.
If we ever need to move you out of your home, we will work closely with you to find you a suitable alternative, do our best to ensure no negative changes to your tenancy, and support you throughout the entire process, including the move itself. A ‘home loss payment’ would also be provided if you have lived in your current home for over a year and need to move home permanently.

Being decanted is not the same as being evicted. A decant is when we ask you to move - either temporarily or permanently - so we can carry out major repairs, refurbishments, or redevelopment. It is not due to any fault or action on your part.
