Eviction – the last resort
We’re here to help you keep your home and we do everything we can to provide support and assistance to ensure this happens.
Applying for eviction is a possibility if a tenancy agreement has been breached or there are exceptional circumstances – however, it’s always the last resort for us.
Some of the circumstances that a housing association may apply for eviction may include a customer persistently failing to pay rent or failing to meet arrears repayments, anti-social behaviour (ASB), breaking the law, tenancy fraud or not keeping the property in an acceptable condition.
Contact us if you have an issue
If you find yourself struggling with your rent or maintaining your tenancy for any reason, the most important thing to do is contact us as soon as possible.
We will always try to work with you to help you address the situation – for example, we could agree a repayment plan if you’re in arrears, or we may ask you to moderate your behaviour in line with your tenancy agreement if ASB is an issue. We have a dedicated tenancy support service and can connect you with free, independent welfare and debt advice – we consider each case individually and try to tailor our support, always considering your health, wellbeing and safety as well as those who may be directly impacted by any tenancy related matters.
If you’re worried about eviction
If you do find yourself in the situation of receiving a warning, please contact us right away. If things have progressed and it gets the point of you receiving an eviction notice, you still have rights. We will inform you of these at every step and signpost you to independent advice.
If you’re worried about anything now, get in touch with us and these organisations can also offer free and offer confidential advice:
- Citizens Advice Oxfordshire - benefits, debt, and housing guidance. We fund a free debt and welfare advice service open to all customers, whether you live in West Oxfordshire or elsewhere, and this is completely independent of us
- Shelter - housing and legal advice
- Your local council - especially if you think you may be at risk of homelessness
Everyone’s situation is different and there could still be time to find solutions, and help you stay in your home.
So, if you’re concerned for any reason about your tenancy or home, please get in touch. If it’s urgent or an emergency, please call us in the first instance.
