Scrutiny Group revisits Empty Homes Standard
Our Scrutiny Group is a small team of customers who meet regularly to examine our services, working with customers and Cottsway staff to identify what's working well and where improvements can be made.
The group recently completed a follow-up review of the Empty Homes Standard to assess progress against the recommendations they made in 2021.
They found that the actions identified in the original report have largely been delivered, including:
- The Standard being renamed and rewritten in clearer, more accessible language.
- The decorating pack scheme being expanded through increased funding.
- Decorating packs now being delivered directly to customers' homes.
- Improved customer satisfaction across all measures.
The group also recognised that changes in legislation, regulation and industry practice mean the Standard would benefit from further updates to ensure it remains relevant and effective.
They have therefore put forward a number of new suggestions, including:
- Updating the Standard to reflect new energy technologies, regulatory requirements and changes in housing legislation, supported by regular reviews.
- Improving communication and transparency around decorating pack eligibility and the contents available for different property sizes.
These proposals are now being considered, and work will begin on making further improvements where possible.
